Everyone knows that front-wheel and rear-wheel drive are different. Each of these setups has its own unique list of benefits as well as drawbacks. So what exactly are these two options and why choose one over the other?
Front-wheel-drive vehicles have an engine and transmission setup that sends power only to the front two wheels. They then pull the vehicle along. Rear-wheel drive means that the power is being directed to the back wheels, which then propel the vehicle forward instead.
A front-wheel-drive vehicle is likely going to have better weight distribution and therefore better traction. The weight of the engine is over the front wheels, giving the ability to grip the road. Performance cars often go with rear-wheel drive because they can turn more tightly. They also feel more balanced and wear their tires more evenly. This is because the front set of wheels are responsible for steering while the rear wheels are responsible for the power.
